While 2020 has been a hard year for many of us, people still show that some positive events and accidents can be achieved. And as the world continues to evolve technology, scientists are continuing to make breakthroughs on the ground.d Egyptian scientist and researcher Elham Fadaly and her team at the University of Technology in the Netherlands have recently been awarded the 2020 Physics World Breakthrough of the Year by Physics World Magazine. To produce silicon-based material with a direct bandgap to emit light for transmission of communication data, Fadaly was announced as the winner.d

The several different approaches to the problems of materials science have in recent times significantly improved the ability to develop the physical properties of semiconductors. Silicon is today based on almost all micro-electronics from all semiconductors and will do this for a long time to come. However, the serious drawback in optoelectronics of an indirect bandgap has restricted the use of elementary Si. In modern society, the omnipresent Si microelectronics "chip." A lot of studies have gone into the production of these high-tech wonders and these studies continue at a faster and more rapid rate.d

The fusion of Si-based electronics with photonics primarily requires the pursuit of hybrid technologies that are often costly and complicated for light emissions and modulators. Effective diodes, lasers, and optical amplifying systems for use in optical Communications Applications such as fiber optics and displays are general specifications for si-based light sources.d

Photons, light particles, have substituted electrons for data transmission in communication networks over the last 50 years. The immense increase in cable, television, and the internet has powered the very wide bandwidth of optical signals.d

Photons, however, have not substituted computers with electrons yet. A significant improvement in computing speed (the speed of on-chip and on-chip communication can be increased by 1000) and simultaneously decreases the power needed for it to work will be possible with light to relay data to processor chips and the interconnections between them.d

Currently, the most advanced microprocessor chips include tens of billions of transistors, and when used, their copper electrical interconnections generate vast quantities of heat. In contrast to photons, electrons have an electric charge and mass. They are dispersed by the silicones and metal atoms, allowing them to vibrate and emit heat as they are flowing through metals or semiconductor material. Most power is thus wasted from a microprocessor.d

The Problem of Silicium Light

Today, due to the advantageous electronic features and availability of this material, the entire electronic industry can use silicon in computer chips.d

The challenge of emitting light from silicon

Today the whole electronics industry is geared up to use silicon in computer chips because of the advantageous electronic properties of this material and its availability. It is a good semiconductor, a very abundant element, and – as silicon oxide – a constituent of glass and sand.d
